Here is something particularly new I found a while back when researching the history of the romantic trend for a project of mine. The New Romanticism Fashion Movement. So, What is this fashion movement? New Romantic was a pop culture movement originating in the U.K during the early 1980's. Also known as New Wavers and Blitz Kids. The Youth fashion movement was flamboyant, eccentric fashion. The movement went on to dominate the charts and fashion worldwide. Fashion Vs. Music was taken its toll. Music was a major influence on this culture. 'New Romantic' bands for example included Spandau Ballet and Duran Duran. Influential singers of the time included David Bowie and Boy George. New Romanticism emerged onto the scene within London Nightclubs, adapting a change in nightclubs. Friday and Saturday nights were now becoming the only important music nights.

A movement that dominated worldwide, early fashion designers of New Romantic clothing included the designs of Vivenne Westwood, Stevie Stewart and Colin Swift. The colourful dramatic look contained frills and luscious fabrics. People made an effort with their fashion choices to look flamboyant, beautiful, attractive and luxurious. Clothing was heavily inspired by period costumes, the clothing was theatrical with lavish materials like satin, silk and velvet. Adam Ant, the new uprising pop star of the 80's was the perfect example for creating fashion in the beautiful aspects of New Romanticism. Westwood began creating romantic ideas later defining and developing into a pirate look. Westwood borrowed the idea from 16th century style of pirates with frilly shirts, hussar jackets, leather trousers and hair braids. Suited to be designed especially for Adam and the Ants, the new wave band.

This was an era that was slightly confusing, guys wearing eyeliner and lipstick whereas women were sporting shoulder pads and trouser suits.

'Dressing up' was back in trend again and filtered every avenue of fashion which then eventually influenced the world. Occasion wear was inspired by the romantic idea of dressing up.

New Romanticism changed the face of British style during the early 1980's.
