'JOHN LEWIS CHRISTMAS CRAZE' Let's be honest, the only thing John Lewis owns about Christmas is their annual Christmas adverts. The most wonderful time of the year is already upon us and it has been over a month since the realise of the official 2017 Christmas ad. Meaning at the time there was plenty of excited Brits. It's now official that it has become a British tradition to watch the first viewing of John Lewis' Christmas advert. It's safe to say that the nation is waiting.. impatiently.
I bring this up (not for the fact that John Lewis was my previous assignment) but because I am in fact one of those typical Brits who cannot wait for the iconic and predicted number one Christmas ad.
This year marks the tenth anniversary since John Lewis aired their first ever Christmas ad back in 2007. A young boy and his imaginary monster under the bed have been the stars of 2017. Although let's be honest, compared to previous ads and competitive stores is this really worth to be one of the best Christmas adverts of 2017. So far there has been mixed reviews and whether this has gone down a cheery or sad route overall will remain unknown.
In celebration of Christmas, I've taken a look through the 'not so perfect' up towards the best aired advert John Lewis produced. There is no doubt that this will be largely predictable but is purely based on what made me cheer!
John Lewis adverts, ranked from worst to best.
2008 - From me to you

I have to start off by saying this is not so perfect at all. It's a very commercial advert. I feel this completely gives off the message that Christmas is all about presents and specifically advertising John Lewis' finest treasures. Contains lack of real emotion and minimal feelings.
2007 - The Shadows

The first ever Christmas advert aired from the high-end department store. Undoubtedly very clever. At the time this was a good attempt to create a sweet advert.
2009 - Sweet Child o'mine

Reminding you of being a child during Christmas time. The excitement through the December is uncanny to children. Although it is clearly focused on presents, it's hard not to smile at the sweet children's faces.
2010 - A tribute to givers

A little more touching than the previous years. It brings us joy & feels knowing how loving it is to give presents to your much loved ones. It especially touches our hearts (clearly more so from the little boy making a stocking for his dog).
2017 - Moz the Monster

The friendship between a monster and a little boy blossoms. The latest Christmas ad from John Lewis which first aired in early November has mixed reviews from the nation. I have to say myself this isn't the best. Yes it is a heart warming friendship but has left some viewers feeling a little confused by the end.
2015 - Man on the Moon

This years campaign was created to highlight the elderly loneliness at Christmas. Although it didn't go as far as they imagined or perhaps didn't create the same feeling from some viewers. It did indeed raise a few eyebrows considering an old man is looking through the telescope at a little girl's bedroom. Although it certainly left viewers with a few tears in their eyes (me especially!)
2014 - Monty the penguin

Very heartwarming and quite tearful. Monty the penguin only wanted to find love!
2013 - The Bear and the Hare

Created by the animators behind The Lion King so no wonder it was already one of the nation's favourite. This one really gives you the feels, even if it is just an animation! It's a well deserved favourite and much loved. The design work itself was bound to make a success.
2016 - Buster the Boxer

Last years advert is the most refreshing to me. It is one to remember indeed because who can't forget a boxer dog bouncing with joy on the trampoline on Christmas morning. Many applauded John Lewis for taking a lighthearted and humorous approach. It took a break from the emotional, sad campaigns from previous years with this funny story.
2012 - The Journey

A sweet advert about love. It's not just about giving presents either. It's adorable. The length a typically made snowman goes to get his 'snowlady' wife some cosy knitwear is beautiful and out of the ordinary.
2011 - The Long Wait

This ad. The best and the most favourite. Not just by me, I am almost certain the nation fell in love with this way back in 2011. He wasn't waiting to open his own presents, he was waiting to give one to his parents. I can't watch this without having a few tears in my eyes by the end. It actually didn't overly feature any John Lewis products either. It was a complete game changer and will most likely be in the top list of the most loved Christmas adverts. Who knows how John Lewis will top this off.
